Earlier this year, we were alerted to temporary climbing access changes at Great Falls National Park. As can be seen from their Facebook post, the park is working to stabilize and preserve Lock 2 of the Patowmack Canal and had closed the majority of the River Trail, thereby effectively closing the bulk of the climbing areas in the park.
We reached out to the park, and after some talks, the park reassessed the closure and has reduced it to a much smaller portion of the River Trail. This effectively restricts the temporary climbing closure to Aid Box only. The park hopes to have this work done in May.
We thank Great Falls Park for its transparency and open mindedness in our discussion. We encourage the climbing community to respect this temporary closure, and we will be sure to get the word out when this closure is lifted.
