Sorry MAC supporters, but this event has been cancelled due to the ongoing government shutdown. We hope to reschedule it in the future!
When you think about DC climbing, images of the steep and difficult climbs over the Potomac River are some of the first things that come to mind. Great Falls is where many of the climbers in this area first learned to climb outside, and one of the busiest National Park units around. Join Mid Atlantic Climbers on Sunday, October 12th for a day of stewardship with the National Park Service to give back to the Great Falls!
Schedule:
- Registration: 8:45am
- Project work: 9:00am-1:00 pm
- Raffle: 1:00 pm
What We’ll be Doing:
We will be removing invasive species and vegetation covering the stone wall that borders the historic Patowomack Canal. The wall is a point of interest to visitors and school children on educational park tours, but is obscured by overgrowth.
The work area has heavy overgrowth and there are thorns and vines. Please wear heavy clothing such as jeans and closed toe shoes. Some plants may be difficult to remove; we will use tools such as shovels, mattocks, etc. All tools such as loppers, pruners, shovels will be provided.
NOTE: Be sure to register so we can add your name to the list we will be providing the park. By doing so, you’ll be able to enter the park free of charge for this event.
Where To Meet/How To Get There:
Meet in the main parking lot of Great Falls Park near the visitors center. Because you registered, let the gate know and you can enter without paying.
What To Bring:
- Closed toed shoes
- Long, thick clothes for working in thorny overgrown vegetation.
- Working gloves (if you don’t have any, we will provide some)
- Water bottle
- Snacks
