Old Rag – Shenandoah National Park

Old Rag – Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park announced and implemented a pilot ticket program at Old Rag Mountain. This program, effective March 2022, requires all visitors of Old Rag reserve a ticket prior to visiting. Details of this pilot program include:

  • Ticket availability will be limited to 800 per day, with 400 available 30 days in advance and the remaining 400 available 5 days in advance.
  • Ticket fees will be $1.
  • Entrance fees to the park still apply in addition to this ticket fee.
  • Tickets must be purchased through https://www.recreation.gov. Tickets will not be available at the Old Rag fee station.

What’s Next?

In January 2024, the park announced the ticketing system as permanent. We’ve received no reports from the climbing community about this having a significant deterring effect on access to the climbing at Old Rag. Mid Atlantic Climbers is not actively engaging any efforts with regard to this program.
