Old Rag – Shenandoah National Park

Shenandoah National Park has announced and implemented a pilot ticket program at Old Rag Mountain. This program, effective March 2022, requires all visitors of Old Rag reserve a ticket prior to visiting. Details of this pilot program include:

  • Ticket availability will be limited to 800 per day, with 400 available 30 days in advance and the remaining 400 available 5 days in advance.
  • Ticket fees will be $1.
  • Entrance fees to the park still apply in addition to this ticket fee.
  • Tickets must be purchased through https://www.recreation.gov. Tickets will not be available at the Old Rag fee station.

What’s Next?

Currently, this program is in effect, but only as a pilot. While we have no timeline at this point, the Park has stated it is collecting data during this pilot period; data we hope it will share with the public. At this point, we are waiting on the Park to report its findings and its plans after the pilot program has ended. If you’ve experienced any issues while at Old Rag, we encourage you to let us know so that we can better track the impact this program is having.

Latest Milestone

Mid Atlantic Climbers has submitted comments to the Park on their draft pilot program proposal. As of March 2022, the Park has instituted the pilot ticket program.

How Can I Help?

At this time, there is little opportunity involvement until we hear further from the Park on the results of the pilot program and their plans moving forward. If you’ve experienced any issues while at Old Rag, we encourage you to let us know so that we can better track the impact this program is having.
