Current Climbing Alerts

Sykesville, MDIssue: As of 1/16/2024 the Jam boulder is confirmed to be on private property and we do not have permission to climb there. Police are monitoring the area.

The Levitation boulders are also private property and closed.
Harpers Ferry, MD, VA, WVIssue: All Virginia climbing in the park, as well as Jefferson Rock, Shenandoah Street Cliffs, and all cliffs along Shenandoah Street in the Lower Town of Harpers Ferry, WV is CLOSED as detailed on the Park's website.

Issue: Seasonal Peregrine Falcon Closure
The 2025 seasonal Peregrine Falcon closures will be in effect from February 15 through July 31. The following climbing areas will be closed for the duration of the nesting season: The Gully, Sign Wall, ABC Ramps, Train Tunnel Wall, and Confederate Walls.
Cross Country Trail Boulders, Newington, VAIssue: 2025 sewage repair project by Fairfax County. The trail and access to boulders is CLOSED for the remainder of 2025, and possibly longer. Check for updates on the sewage project here.
Catoctin Mountain Park, MDIssue: The Park requests that the following boulders be effectively closed to climbing:

Hog Rock trail area: Warfare/Knifewall and Chief Block/Gateway Fin

Thurmont Vista area: Sudden/Smelted

Chimney Rock (only the Chimney Rock area itself – the Pyramid Boulder is outside the area of concern)

The Narrows, MDSeasonal peregrine falcon closures Feb 15-July 31.

Please note that Wills Mountain is currently closed (This includes everything climber left from Rama Wall on the main wall, and the entirety of the Far Wall) due to various assessments being done by the Maryland DNR as part of the purchasing of land to secure legal access to the mountain. We do not have solid date on when this closure will be lifted.
T. Howard Duckett (Rocky Gorge) Reservoir, MDIssue: Rocky Gorge and all WSSC properties are currently CLOSED to climbing.
Governor Stable, PA Issue: Governor Stable is closed as of August 1. More information and the rules for climbing can be found on the South Central Pennsylvania Climbers website.

BACK AREA (past Pyramid Boulder) CLOSED indefinitely.\
Southwest PA State Game LandsIssue: State Game Lands 51 and 138 in Fayette County are CLOSED to climbing. The most well-known areas are Coll’s Cove, Lost Crag, The Vault, Casparis, Rob’s Knob, Fish Rocks, and Zebley Flats.

Our partners at Southwestern Pennsylvania Climbers Coalition and Access Fund are working to explore options to maintain climbing access. More information can be found on the SWPACC website.
Franklin, WVIssue: We've received differing, sometimes conflicting, information from third parties on access. We know of no issues between the owners and the climbing community. If you do choose to climb there, please practice Leave No Trace principles.
Loch Raven, MDIssue: Watershed land that does not currently allow climbing as a recreational activity.
Cunningham Falls State Park, MDIssue: The park requests no climbing specifically at Cunningham Falls Manor Campground boulders from April through October, which is peak camping season for the park. This seasonal closure affects the following boulders: Hidden, Saucer, Pyramid, The Womb, John's, Diamond, and Arete.
Gambrill State Park, MDIssue: Anthem boulder is partially on private property, and the landowner is not receptive to climbers. Please avoid this boulder for now while we gather information regarding access with the park.
Rock Creek Park, DCIssue: Climbing is an illegal activity in the park and can result in a fine of up to $5,000.
