October 20

When you think about DC climbing, images of the steep and difficult climbs over the Potomac River are the first things that come to mind. We all love climbing, hiking, and picnicking at Great Falls, now is our chance to give back to this precious historical resource. This is one of the areas longest running Adopt a Crag events, and we need volunteers to help reduce the impact such large numbers of visitors have on this park each year.

  • Registration: 8:30am
  • Project work: 9:00am-12:00 pm
  • Raffle and wrap-up: 12:30 pm

What We’ll be Doing:

We will be improving the water access trail just before the bridge on the River Trail. This trail is mainly for kayakers and climbers, but many hikers are now using this trail to venture down to the edge of the river. The heavy traffic, along with heavy rain fall have caused a lot of erosion and has eaten away at the hillside. This project will involve adding steps to the existing trail, filling in gaps in the trail with dirt and gravel, and closing off other social trails in this area.

Work will be strenuous, and involve carrying buckets of dirt, shoveling, and carrying logs.

Where To Meet/How To Get There:

Meet in the upper parking lot (climber lot) of Great Falls Park. Upon entering the park, take an immediate right turn.

What To Bring:

  • Closed toed shoes
  • Working gloves (if you have them)
  • Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in
  • Water bottle
  • Lunch
