Alberton Rock is located in Patapsco Valley State Park in Maryland. It’s a 50 foot rock right off a biking/hiking trail after a flat 10-15 minute walk from the parking lot. With about 10 routes, easy top access for setting up anchors, and being located right next to a creek, it’s a great location for a day of toproping. However, it’s easy access has also led to it being tagged with a lot of graffiti and a spot to leave trash. We’d like to remove as much of the graffiti as possible, pick up trash, and trim vegetation as needed to help improve the condition of this local crag.
Registration in advance is required – register here!
Schedule:
- Registration + Waivers: 8:30am
- Project work: 9am-12pm
Where To Meet/How To Get There:
Parking is at the Alberton Road Trailhead (8101 Dogwood Rd, Windsor Mill, MD 21244). The lot holds close to 9 cars, but park close and save room for others! If we have a large number of signups, we will figure out alternative parking arrangements. Once we arrive, it is about a 10-15 minute flat walk on pavement and gravel to reach the rock. We will carry materials from the parking area to the cleanup location.

What We’ll be Doing:
The primary focus of this project is graffiti removal using Elephant Snot (a graffiti removal product), scrubbing the paint and product with provided brushes, and using a pressure washer to remove the paint. We will also be picking up trash around the crag and potentially trimming overgrown vegetation.
What to Bring:
Because this is a graffiti project, wear clothing you don’t mind getting dirty in. We recommend long pants and long sleeves, as some volunteers have reported minor skin irritation due to prolonged skin contact with the graffiti removal product we will be using. We provide all PPE (goggles, gloves, masks) but if you have your own working gloves in your preferred size, please bring them along.
- Food and water for the day
- Good sturdy boots
- Long pants, long sleeve shirt
- Working gloves (if you have them)
