At the end of 2014, Mid Atlantic Climbers and the Access Fund submitted comments on the 2015 Superintendent’s Compendium for Catoctin Mountain Park in Maryland. Since 2012, bouldering in the park has been effectively disallowed, as park rules have confined all climbing to only Work Rock, a small outcrop in the park. Mid Atlantic Climbers learned about this closure earlier in 2014.
We are happy to report that our comments have opened up a dialogue with the park about bouldering access, and we look forward to continuing this discussion with park staff.
Please respect the current bouldering closure in Catoctin Mountain Park while Mid Atlantic Climbers and the Access Fund work with the park to a hopefully positive resolution. Proof of a considerate local climbing community will be one of our strongest arguments for restoring bouldering access in the park. We will continue to provide updates on this issue as new developments occur, so stay tuned!
And if you’re not yet a member of Mid Atlantic Climbers and the Access Fund, please join today! A strong membership is an important asset when we are speaking to land management staff and private land owners about preserving climbing access.
