June 7th
Located along the east side of the Potomac River in Maryland, just north of DC, Carderock is one of the most popular urban climbing areas in the Mid-Atlantic. If you can believe it, this is MAC’s 12th annual Adopt a Crag at Carderock! This year we’ll be partnering with the C&O Canal Trust to recruit volunteers to show this historic crag some love.
Schedule:
- Registration: 8:30am (be sure to get your free shirt, courtesy of REI)
- Project work: 9am-12:30pm
- Cook-out to be provided by Earth Treks after: around 1pm
- Raffle after cook out, including an REI Pinnacle 35 pack and four REI Flag 18 packs!
Where To Meet/How To Get There:
Follow I-495 to Exit 13 for Carderock/Clara Barton Parkway. Drive north on the Clara Barton Parkway to the first exit for Carderock Recreation Area and the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division. Turn left and drive across the parkway on a bridge into the national parkland. Take a Right at the intersection and follow the road to the last parking area (the climbers lot) where you’ll see MAC volunteers waiting to help you get checked in.

What To Bring:
- Closed toed shoes
- Working gloves (if you have them)
- Clothes you don’t mind getting dirty in
- Water bottle
- A snack
- Reusable eating ware for the cook-out after
What We’ll be Doing:
Carderock gets a lot of traffic along the cliff top and at the base of the cliff, which can cause serious impact issues when left unmaintained. MAC volunteers will be mulching at the cliff top and the base to make sure we get a hold of the erosion issues and better control the overall impact. We’ll also do some minor trail brushing and trash pick up.

Please print, fill out, and bring the C & O Canal’s Volunteer Service Agreement with you! Doing this will help with our usual “check-in bottleneck”. Registering helps us make sure we’ve got the right kinds of projects planned for the people we’ve got coming and also that we have enough food and raffle items! Please register if you’re planning on coming out!
