Willis Mountain State Park Closure
The Maryland Department Of Natural Resources (DNR) has closed Willis Mountain State Park, a subset of what is known in the climbing community as The Narrows, as part of its effort to improve public access. In March 2024, the department purchased the former Artmore Plastics Corporation property in order to provide access to the park through public property. The department is currently in the process of various compliance efforts as required by state and federal law. Climbing in Willis Mountain State Park is currently prohibited.
What’s Next?
The Maryland Department Of Natural Resources is currently going through a variety of processes (surveys, assessments, etc) to ensure the area is safe for visitors as well as that it complies with state and federal laws. We do not have any reliable dates on a timeline for this overall effort, but have been told that this could potentially be a multi-year process.
Latest Milestone
Mid Atlantic Climbers has made contact with Maryland DNR staff involved in this effort and will continue to keep in contact throughout this process to stay apprised of any updates relevant to the climbing community.
How Can I Help?
At this time, there is little opportunity for involvement from Mid Atlantic Climbers or the climbing community at large. We will share any important updates if/when we receive them.
Please respect Maryland DNR’s closure and do not climb at Willis Mountain State Park until further notice.
