Thursday, August 8th was a sad day for one of our favorite local climbing areas. A large portion of the X-Face at Carderock was vandalized. Names, simple shapes, and scratch-outs were carved into the rock face using smaller rocks as carving tools. Some of the damage is superficial but some of the gouges are deep and may be permanent.
Mid Atlantic Climbers notified the C&O National Historic Park and we will be following up with the park to help remediate the damage.
This incident serves as a reminder both of how precious these natural resources are and that stewardship is everyone’s responsibility. If you see something, say something.
